Research project Ryokan 良寛
June-July 2024, Tokyo
I aim to create a multimedia dance performance inspired by the Japanese Buddhist monk renowned for his poetry and calligraphy. The project explores the intersection of Japanese calligraphy and contemporary dance, reflecting on life, nature, and identity. As a Japanese woman living in Sweden after a long European dance career, Ryokan allows me to reconnect with my heritage and examine cultural dualities. By blending ancient traditions with modern dance, I explore the evolution of rituals and their relevance today.
In this research, I visited Japan and collaborated with a calligrapher, Rie Goto and a multi media artist, Kunihiko Matsuo to develop themes and practiced calligraphy to rediscover its emotional resonance. I visited Kyuyo Ishikawa’s exhibition to experience his unique style and explored Tokyo’s calligraphy museum, gaining insights into its history and philosophy. Ryokan offers Swedish audiences a glimpse into Japanese culture, fostering reflection on identity, tradition, and cultural exchange.
